IIS V. Moretti
Our school is situated on the outskirts of the city of Roseto degli Abruzzi, a seaside town on the Adriatic Sea in the region of Abruzzo in Central Italy.
We are about 26,000 inhabitants and our economy depends mostly on summer tourism, agriculture and small businesses. Due to the recession, many businesses have closed down and there is a great deal of unemployment especially among young people. Luckily in summer there are many tourists from all over Europe and Italy who spend their holidays here and this gives everyone an opportunity to work.
Our school is a Technical/Vocational Institute for students from 14-18 offering seven different Courses:
- Business Studies
- Computer Programming
- Tourism
- Graphics and Communication
- Surveying
- Fashion Arts (Vocational)
- Electronics (Vocational)
The students study mostly the same subjects during the first two years and specialize in their sector the last three years. At the end of the fifth year they take a State exam and if they pass they receive a diploma and can enter the workforce or attend university.
There are about 900 students in the Moretti Institute and most of them (over 60%) live in suburbs, rural areas and small towns in the hills. 10% of students come from poor socio-economic & culturally disadvantaged backgrounds and receive special subsidies for education. There are about 4% of disabled students with special education teachers who attend to their needs.
In the last two years there has been an increase in the number of students coming from migrant families who have settled in the nearby areas (from 1% in 2005 to 10% in 2009). These families mostly come from the Eastern European countries, Africa, Brazil, etc. About 70% of students come from working class families.
For this reason taking part in European projects is so important for our students, because they can widen their horizons, improve their knowledge of foreign languages and cultures and become much more motivated in receiving further education and getting better job opportunities in Europe.
